What are The Top 10 Mountain Biking Routes & Destinations In The World?

Do you like to take your mountain bike with you on vacation and explore all the paths and best routes that you find? Perhaps you even travel the world and rent mountain bikes at some of the top destinations. There are those great places to go biking, and then there are the top 10 mountain bike routes in the world. Each top 10 list is going to look a little different, but no doubt you will find these places extraordinary.

One of the best mountain biking trails in the world is called Colorado Trail. Then there is another called The Whole Enchilada. That sounds like an exciting and challenging adventure, don’t you think? When you look at some top travel sites, they rank destinations for you according to their own professional opinions. Others rank them according to reviews from travelers. Each site might have different metrics and varying amounts of participants with different backgrounds. The point I’m making is that there are some mountain biking sites out there that get their rankings from the people.

The only downside to that is certain sites may be more prone to identify biking destinations within the country the participants live. Not every mountain biker travels the world. I say all of that so you can keep this in mind as you look at some of the top mountain biking destinations. If you look at some of the sites, and all of them are in the US, now you know why. It will be because there were many US participants who have traveled the country but have not traveled the world.

So far, we have identified two of the top 10 mountain biking destinations in the world. Let’s look at some more of them. If you look at user ranking sites, those rankings are always changing, too, which makes things interesting. One site I looked at featured Monarch Crest Trail coming in at #3. I was delighted to see that because Monarch Crest Trail is in Salida CO. I have been to Salida and Monarch Mountain twice for two ski/snowboarding adventures.

Notice how many of the places seem to be in Colorado. Colorado is a beautiful state for sure. Of course, we have only identified three out of the ten top biking destinations in the world so far. The next one is Aberfoyle, Scotland. How would you like to take a mountain biking adventure in the beautiful country of Scotland? To round out the top five, let’s identify one more. The next one is Top of the World Trail in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada.

France has some great mountain biking destinations, too. One of the best there and in the entire world is the Morzine Slopes. Then there are the campus trails above Santa Cruz in California. Oh yes, we are back to the US again. By the way, I never told you where The Whole Enchilada is located. It is a city called Moab. McKenzie River Trail in Eugene is another top mountain biking trail.

Then there is Doctor Park in Crested Butte, Montana. You know that Montana has to have some great mountain biking trails. Be sure that you do pay attention to what you need to know when experiencing these trails. Some of them can be quite challenging I’m sure. And of course, make sure you bring all the supplies you need and have fun. If you are traveling the world, you are obviously going to have to get some of the things you need when you arrive at your destination. Plan accordingly, and have a blast on your next mountain biking experience.

If you are looking for the best place in Spain for road cycling, you should head to northern Spain. This is far from the hub of tourism and ensures that you will be able to take in the green vistas, secluded coves and coastal towns that the country has to offer. It is the Cantabria province that you need to look at visiting.

The port town of Santander, which is the capital of Cantabria is a good place to start your cycle route. From here, you should travel along the Costa Verde. The road that you will be cycling on hugs the coast and will take you through a number of villages and towns that dot the countryside.

While cycling along this route, you should stop at Santilla de Mar or stop by the Altamira Caves which home some of the most amazing ancient cave paintings. If you are into architecture, you can stop by Comillas that has a number of art nouveau buildings.

If you continue on this route, you will eventually hit some of the serious mountain terrains. It is important to note that this terrain can be tough and is often used for training by cycling professionals. If you are not able to handle this terrain, it is best to not take this section of the route.

The Best Mountain Biking In Spain

Not all cyclists are looking for a smooth road route and would prefer a bit of mountain biking on their holiday. If you are one of these people, Spain has some great places for you. The best place to go will be Andalucia which is considered a haven for mountain biking. There is a wide range of riding trails available in the area to suit your level of experience.

If you are looking to spend a few days on a trail, a good base will be the city of Cordoba. The mountain biking trails here will wind their ways high above the city and there is more than 1000 km of track to follow. With this amount of track, riders will be able to find a trail that suits them.

You will be able to find easy trails as well as more demanding trails. If you want one of the more demanding trails, you should look at the 40km trail that heads into the Sierra de Cazorla which offers tough climbs and heart-stopping drops.

If you are more serious about your mountain biking, you need to head further south to the Sierra Nevada National Park. This park offers some of Europe’s most challenging mountain biking trails. In fact, there is an endless supply of trails which take you through the 860 square kilometer park. You can take some time to cycle through forests or head down a farm track.
